My Mother's Garden

My parents moved to Nevada about two years ago. They have remodeled a home that resembles so much of their character. A home that is ranch style, open and contains a very rustic feel. Much of the house is recycled, from the light fixtures to most of the wood finishes. Their outdoor side wall consists of old planked wood that adds light and texture to the home. I fell in love with it right away.  My mother has an amazing garden that wraps around the entire house. There is a lot of citrus consisting mostly of meyer lemon tress. These lemons are not bitter as traditional lemons, more sweet like candy. I could eat the whole lemon!

Mint was growing like a weed filling her beds. The aroma is so comforting, especially with the rosemary up the back walls. Some of her trees had bright ruby pomegranates that were ready to be picked! I snuck all of these fresh goodies into my carry on back home.

All of these growing foods are at their highest point of nutrition and there is nothing better than the beauty they offer and the healing they contain when consumed straight off the vine, picked from a tree or pulled from the soil.

Functional Foods

Whole foods have primary FUNCTIONS in our body. They are natures way of healing us and maintaining health in our lives.

So what are functional foods and why am I ranting about lemons and mint anyways?

Functional Foods are high nutritional foods that consist of all the vitamins and minerals our blood, tissues, organs, skin, hair, nails, thoughts and feelings need. A food that will provide a health benefit beyond basic nutrition. They contain phytochemicals. These “plant chemicals” are complex by the pigments, antioxidants, and thousands of other compounds they have which protect us from heart disease, vision loss, cancer to diabetes.

Mint: Contains menthol oil which is very soothing for nausea and aids poor digestion. The aroma it contains activates our salivary glands in our mouth which triggers digestive enzymes.

  • Improves oral health
  • Helps upset stomachs
  • Natural stimulant from fatigue and depression
  • Inhibit histamines that cause allergies
  • Highest in Vitamin A, Iron, and dietary fiber

Add this herb to your water for its health benefits and soothing flavor!

Lemon: A staple food in my home! I drink hot lemon water every morning. The best way to wake up my body and stimulant my organs for efficient digestion throughout the day.

  • Rich in Vitamin C- Worlds number 1 holistic antibiotic and is known to rejuvenate your skin, giving you that morning glow!
  • Detoxifying- pushes toxins out of the body and aids the digestive system
  • Aids your Organs- Balances pH levels, provides energy to the LIVER with enzymes (LIVER is your number 1 healer organ in your body, when your liver is healthy, your body is maintaining a healthful state.)

Rosemary: We cook with rosemary a lot! The flavor it adds to salmon is my favorite. If you are dealing with hormonal imbalances, rosemary is beneficial in decreasing cortisol levels when stressed.

  • Inhale rosemary oil for 5 minutes to decrease cortisol (hormone produced from your adrenals when you are stressed)
  • Known to decrease pain such as headaches, muscle cramps and arthritis
  • Decreases anxiety

Pomegranates:  One of the top foods for antioxidants that offer medicinal benefits.

  • High Anti-Inflammatory Effects
  • Helps fight prostate cancer
  • Helps fight breast cancer
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Improves memory
The first step to bettering your health is to consume more whole foods and crowd out the processed stuff. Anything that does not have a nutrition label. Go for the organic options and non GMO. Or better yet, grow your food. If you have the option or even a little sunlight, get pots and fill them with fresh herbs.

Health and Happiness,
